History

Greenwood Cemetery Association is rich in history and family heritage. Back in 1777, George Washington marched his troops through this land on his way to the Battle of Trenton. Originally the site of the “Anderson farm,? Greenwood Cemetery Association was founded in 1874. It was first developed as a monument cemetery; however, the southeast portion was subsequently designated as the Garden of Memories, where only flush bronze memorials may be installed.

The Cemetery’s five public mausoleums offer the protection and comfort of aboveground burial. The Mercer County Veterans Section of Greenwood Cemetery is the first in U.S. history to include aboveground mausoleum crypts for veterans only. The Cemetery has since added two additional mausoleums for veterans.

In addition, there are 15 private mausoleums, with a new public mausoleum slated for completion in the near future. The Greenwood Chapel is used for indoor committal services for inground burials and crematory memorial services. Opened in 1983, the Greenwood Crematory handles approximately 200 cremations annually.

Established as a non-denominational cemetery, Greenwood does have specially designated areas—three Jewish sections, two Catholic sections, one Greek section and a Mercer County Volunteer Fire section—for people desiring this option.

Within Greenwood, there is a new cemetery for the exclusive burial of members of the Islamic community in accordance with the provisions of the Muslim faith.Islamic families can trust Greenwood to honor their traditions and respect their visitation needs after burial.

The well-maintained, tree-lined grounds throughout the cemetery feature beautiful gardens with centerpiece monuments depicting a cross, time, devotion and freedom. Visitors can pray and meditate in the outdoor garden complex or take shelter under the covered breezeway.

A staff of 18 services the almost 500 annual burials, with roughly 60,000 people interred on its grounds. Two main entrances off of Greenwood and Hamilton avenues offer convenient access to this tranquil setting, which is continually enhanced with new landscaping and careful tree grooming. In close proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia, the growing township of Hamilton—with its two beautiful parks and many new homes—makes for the perfect location for Greenwood Cemetery.
